Joe Cole today completed his free transfer from Chelsea to Liverpool and immediately risked upsetting his former employer by provocatively claiming he had joined “the biggest club in the country”. The England international, who has signed a four-year contract, dismissed suggestions that money was the motivation for moving to Liverpool and insisted that swapping Stamford Bridge for Anfield was purely a football decision.

Cole went on to describe Liverpool as a “massive club” and claimed the prospect of running out on a regular basis at the stadium that left such an indelible mark on him in 2005, when he was part of the Chelsea side defeated 1-0 in the Champions League semi-final second leg during an electric night at Anfield, was too good to turn down. Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech ruled out for a month with calf injury

Chelsea’s goalkeeper Petr Cech will be out of action for a month after tearing a calf muscle in his right leg.

Cech, 28, suffered the injury in training on Tuesday, and medical tests confirmed he will miss the start of the new season as a result.

Cech missed a month of last season with a similar injury sustained at Internazionale in the Champions League.

A spokesman for Chelsea confirmed: “Petr will be out for around a month after scans showed a tear in his right calf. He is expected to miss the rest of the pre-season campaign.”

Juliano Belletti heads for Fluminense from Chelsea and Deco may follow

The former Chelsea right-back Juliano Belletti has agreed to join Fluminense and is expected to sign a two-year contract with the Brazilian club after undergoing medical tests later this week.

The 34-year-old defender has been without a club since being released by the English champions in June.

He previously played for Barcelona, for whom he scored the winning goal in the 2006 Champions League final, against Arsenal. Belletti has been capped 25 times by Brazil and was a member of the squad that won the 2002 World Cup.

Fluminense were also reported to be close to a deal to sign the Portugal midfielder Deco, who has also been released by Chelsea.
