Young Chelsea beaten by Ajax

• Ajax beat Chelsea 3-1 in Amsterdam
• Ross Turnbull’s mistake gifts Ajax victory

A calamitous error by Ross Turnbull helped Martin Jol’s Ajax to a comfortable win over a young Chelsea side in their pre-season friendly fixture in Amsterdam.

Jol, who is to remain in Holland after his club refused to release him to take over as Fulham manager, would have been delighted by the positive start his side made against the Premier League champions and they were rewarded with an early goal.

The former Feyenoord youngster Jeffrey Bruma attempted to clear a cross in the box but his header struck Turnbull on the arm and flew into the net.

Daniel Sturridge then scored an excellent equaliser for Carlo Ancelotti’s side, who were again without their World Cup contingent. A loose ball broke to the England Under-21 international around 25

Defender Alex joins goalkeeper Petr Cech on Chelsea injury list

• Thigh problem rules out Brazilian for a month
• Chelsea ban vuvuzelas after consulting fans

Chelsea, who are already without the goalkeeper Petr Cech, will also have the central defender Alex sidelined for the start of the season.

The Brazilian injured his thigh in training and will be out for a month, the Premier League champions said on their website.

Cech is expected to be out for a similar length of time after tearing a calf muscle in his right leg. The pair seem certain to miss the opening game of the season on 14 August at home to promoted West Bromwich Albion, who are managed by the former Chelsea midfielder Roberto Di Matteo, on 14 August.

Chelsea are to ban vuvuzelas from Stamford Bridge this season. “The decision has been made to ensure the continued enjoyment and safety of fans following consultation with the club’s stakeholders, including fans’ representatives who showed strong support for a ban,” said a club statement.

Chelsea’s Petr Cech may miss start of season with calf injury

• Petr Cech has scan after run at Chelsea’s training ground
• Goalkeeper missed four weeks last season with muscle tear

Petr Cech has suffered an injury to his right calf in training and the Chelsea goalkeeper fears that the problem is a recurrence of the muscle tear that ruled him out for four weeks in the second half of last season.

Cech felt the twinge while on a routine run during training in Cobham today and he was immediately forced to withdraw. His lower right leg was placed in a protective boot and he now faces an anxious wait on the results of a scan.

The 28-year-old tore the muscle in his calf in last February’s Champions League last 16 first-leg tie against Internazionale in Milan and he missed the next five matches for his club, including the return fixture with Inter, which Chelsea lost to exit the competition.

Chelsea play the Community Shield at Wembley against Manchester United two weeks on Sunday, before opening the defence of their Premier League title the following weekend at home to West Bromwich Albion and, if Cech’s worst fears are realised, he would miss the beginning of the season.
