Chelsea’s Petr Cech may miss start of season with calf injury

• Petr Cech has scan after run at Chelsea’s training ground
• Goalkeeper missed four weeks last season with muscle tear

Petr Cech has suffered an injury to his right calf in training and the Chelsea goalkeeper fears that the problem is a recurrence of the muscle tear that ruled him out for four weeks in the second half of last season.

Cech felt the twinge while on a routine run during training in Cobham today and he was immediately forced to withdraw. His lower right leg was placed in a protective boot and he now faces an anxious wait on the results of a scan.

The 28-year-old tore the muscle in his calf in last February’s Champions League last 16 first-leg tie against Internazionale in Milan and he missed the next five matches for his club, including the return fixture with Inter, which Chelsea lost to exit the competition.

Chelsea play the Community Shield at Wembley against Manchester United two weeks on Sunday, before opening the defence of their Premier League title the following weekend at home to West Bromwich Albion and, if Cech’s worst fears are realised, he would miss the beginning of the season.

Joe Cole joins Liverpool on four-year contract

• England international moves to Anfield on a free transfer
• Cole becomes Liverpool’s second signing of the summer

Liverpool today signed Joe Cole on a four-year contract, subject to a medical due to take place “in the next 48 hours”.

The 28-year-old England international has moved on a free transfer after his contract with Chelsea expired at the end of June. He had also been linked with Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal, who will both compete in the Champions League next season, but has chosen instead to move to Anfield where he becomes the second signing of the summer after Milan Jovanovic, the Serbian winger who joined from Standard Liège earlier this month, also on a free transfer.

The capture of Cole was seen as a key factor in proving to the likes of Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres, who have both been linked with departures after a disappointing seventh-placed finish in Rafael Benítez’s final season in charge, that Liverpool can still compete for quality signings. He will be seen as a replacement for Yossi Benayoun, the 30-year-old Israeli creative midfielder who has joined Chelsea for £5m.

Hodgson is still on the look-out for a new left-back with Fabio Aurélio having left and Emiliano Insua on the verge of completing his move to Fiorentina. After that the Liverpool manager will hope to secure commitments from Gerrard and Torres about their futures.

The former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp, whose father Harry was keen on signing Cole for Spurs, said reports the player was holding out for the most lucrative contract were unfair.

“From what I know, compared to other players in the Premier League now, he’s not being greedy at all,” Redknapp told Sky Sports News. “He just wants a good deal and rightfully so – he’s a free agent and he’s worked that situation nicely – but I know he’s not asking for anything astronomical, like what is being portrayed in the press.

“He’s just looking for the right club and he needs to play football now. He missed a lot of time at Chelsea last season with his knee injury and didn’t quite get back to the level he showed previously. He needs to go somewhere, be loved, and play football and get back to being the Joe Cole we all know.”

Chelsea pair Michael Essien and John Obi Mikel close to full fitness

• Ray Wilkins says both players on track for new season
• Essien and Mikel missed World Cup with knee injuries

Chelsea have been given a pre-season fitness boost after assistant coach Ray Wilkins confirmed that midfielders Michael Essien and John Obi Mikel should be ready for the start of the new season.

But while Wilkins was delighted with the rehabilitation work of both players, Carlo Ancelotti’s number two insisted the fitness of their World Cup players would require careful handling.

Essien and Mikel missed out on the World Cup finals with Ghana and Nigeria respectively because of knee injuries, but the extra fitness work carried out during the summer break has put them both in contention for a return to action in time for the 14 August kick-off.

“There should be no problem whatsoever,” said Wilkins. “Mikel is slightly in advance of Michael Essien but they are both working very well indeed. They have been working double sessions for the last week and we will get them really firing before the season starts.”

Essien’s return is much anticipated. The midfielder last played for Chelsea in December as complications following knee surgery ended his season and the chance to play in South Africa.

Wilkins is also ready to manage a fitness plan for those players who did take part in the tournament. England trio Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard and John Terry will return before the end of the month along with Didier Drogba, Florent Malouda, Nicolas Anelka, Deco, Salomon Kalou and Branislav Ivanovic.

“Normally after a World Cup, you find with those players who come back from it, it is about December when they seem to hit a wall,” added Wilkins.

“It is very important we manage them in the correct manner and we get them to a level where they won’t be as fit as we want them to be, but as they creep into the new year their fitness will come back.

“We also have to get the players we have got here training now into the right fitness condition so that they are prepared to play, because we might not be able to use the guys coming back from the World Cup for the first couple of games. So these young men have to be primed and ready to perform.”

That could mean an early season debut for new signing Yossi Benayoun from Liverpool.

“Yossi is doing well,” added Wilkins. “He has said the pre-season training here is so different to what they did at Liverpool where they didn’t use a ball. They ran and they ran and they ran. But here we use the ball all the time and we feel we get the best out of the guys by using the ball day-in, day-out. I think Yossi is quite enjoying himself.”
