Gary Cahill passes Chelsea medical as move from Bolton moves closer

• 26-year-old Cahill has seven England caps and will cost £7m
• Defender looks set to replace Alex who could join QPR

The England defender Gary Cahill is on the verge of becoming a Chelsea player after passing a medical, the Premier League club’s manager, André Villas-Boas, said after his side’s 1-0 defeat of Sunderland which consolidated fourth place.

After days of negotiations over the Bolton Wanderers centre-back’s terms, the deal now looks a formality after the medical at the London club’s training ground earlier on Saturday. “Gary passed his medical and should be our player soon,” Villas-Boas was quoted as saying by the BBC.

The 26-year-old, who has seven caps and will cost Chelsea about £7m according to reports, will link up at Chelsea with the England captain, John Terry, and looks set to replace Alex.

Reports say the Brazilian defender, who asked for a transfer due to a lack of first-team opportunities, could join Chelsea’s neighbours Queens Park Rangers.

Cahill joined Bolton from Aston Villa in 2008 with his career apparently going backwards but he has developed into an outstanding defender even though Owen Coyle’s side have struggled all season.

Chelsea have moved now with Cahill out of contract at Bolton at the end of the season. Tottenham Hotspur had also previously shown interest in the defender.

He will now compete with Brazilian David Luiz to be Terry’s central defensive partner, with Cahill fighting for a place in England’s Euro 2012 squad.

Queens Park Rangers ‘agree fee for Chelsea defender Alex’

• Brazilian defender could become Mark Hughes’s first signing
• Reports suggest Alex may wish to leave England

QPR have reportedly agreed a fee with Chelsea to take the defender Alex to Loftus Road.

Rangers had a bid turned down for theBrazilian earlier in the week but have now reached a consensus with their west London rivals.

They must now convince the 29-year-old to become Mark Hughes’ first signing as manager, amid reports he may no longer wish to remain in England.

Chelsea accepted QPR’s offer less than 24 hours after Gary Cahill travelled to London to complete the formalities of his move from Bolton.

Alex, who has also been linked with Paris St Germain and Juventus, was banished from the Blues’ first-team squad in November after submitting a transfer request.

His signing would represent another coup for ambitious Rangers after they convinced Hughes to succeed Neil Warnock as manager on Tuesday.

As well as having a previous bid for Alex snubbed – reportedly £3m – they have had offers turned down for Andy Johnson, Christopher Samba and Steven Pienaar.

Should Rangers complete Alex’s signing, he will have to wait to make his debut as the club missed the deadline for tomorrow’s game at Newcastle, while he is ineligible for Tuesday’s FA Cup third-round replay against MK Dons.

His first game would therefore be next Saturday’s league match against Wigan, which is followed by a possible FA Cup clash with Chelsea.

Speaking on Wednesday, Hughes said of Alex: “There is interest in top-quality players and the player you mention is very much in that level.”

Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas said 24 hours later: “We’re just trying to reach the level of proposal we think is good for the player. We’ll present anything to the player.

“He has to make a decision. He has generated interest from a lot of clubs.”

Chelsea signed Alex from Santos in 2004 but work-permit issues saw him loaned to PSV Eindhoven for three seasons before he joined his parent club in the summer of 2007.

The Brazil international helped the club win the FA Cup in 2009 and their first ever double the following season.

The arrival of David Luiz a year ago saw him marginalised and although he eventually won back his place and started this season in the team, he soon fell back behind Luiz in the pecking order, culminating in his transfer request.

Chelsea rule out wearing T-shirts in support of John Terry

Club confirms their players will not echo Liverpool’s support of Luis Suárez as skipper faces race abuse charges

Chelsea have confirmed they rejected a proposal for their players to wear T-shirts in support of captain John Terry.

Some of the Blues squad and staff had raised the prospect of donning supportive slogans on their tops, showing their backing for Terry, who has been charged with racially abusing QPR defender Anton Ferdinand.

Liverpool were heavily criticised in some quarters for allowing their players to wear T-shirts in support of Luis Suárez during the warm-up before Wednesday night’s Premier League game at Wigan, following the striker’s eight-match ban for racially abusing Patrice Evra.

Chelsea, who fully back Terry in his fight to clear his name, did not want to risk emulating something that could be viewed as provocative or construed as a potential contempt of court offence ahead of Terry’s hearing at west London magistrates court on 1 February.

A club spokesman said: “We were aware of the idea being discussed among some of the players and staff.

“The club fully supports John but did not think the wearing of T-shirts was an appropriate or helpful show of that support.”
